Shaolin Temple

Shaolin Temple (Shaolinsi) is a Ch'an Buddhist temple at Song Shan Mountain in Henan Province, China. The monastery was built by the Emperor Hsiao-Wen in AD 496, and the first abbot of Shaolin was Batuo, (also, Fotuo -the Chinese transposition of Buddha), an Indian dhyana master who came to China in AD 464 to spread Buddhist teachings. This temple is shrouded in legend and mystery. This is probably the most famous temple in China, not only because of its long history and its role in Chinese Buddhism, but also because of its martial arts or Wushu.

As history recorded that Thirteen Shaolin martial monks rescued the first Tang Dynasty Emperor Li Yuan and his son Li Shimin from a late Sui Dynasty warlord's hands. Years later, when Li Shimin became the emperor of Tang, he granted great honor, money reward and exceptional policies to Shaolin Temple as recognition of the martial monks' help.

The Shaolin Temple in Songshan Mountain of Hanan Province is called the Northern Shaolin while the Shaolin Temples in Fujian Province are called Southern Shaolin. The Southern Shaolin Temple was the result of Northern Temple monk warriors responding to a request for martial assistance from a young Tang Dynasty. Pirate incursions in Fujian Province threatened stability and prosperity in Southern China and the new dynasty needed help. At the Emperor's request, three of the legendary Shaolin Thirteen Cudgel fighting monks, Dao Guang, Seng Man and Seng Feng, led approximately 500 warrior monks south in the early 7th Century A.D. to engage in battle against the pirates. They helped the Tang soldiers turn back the tide, so to speak, and the coastal war was won.

However, the Southern Shaolin was destroyed during the wars in Qing Dynasty, some historical record has it that the Kangxi Emperor ordered army to burn the Southern Shaolin Temple for an unknown reason. And he ordered to destroy all the records for Southern Shaolin. Now there are still disputes on the which temple is the real Southern Shaolin Temple in Fujian. It's said that there are three Shaolin Temples in Fujian: Putian Shaolin Temple, Fuqing Shaolin Temple and Quanzhou Shaolin Temple. The Southern Shaolin Temple is still a mystery for historical experts.

Shaolin is the most well-known Ch'an school that incorporates martial training into its meditative regimen. Although martial training occupies a significant portion of our time and we enjoy it tremendously, the specific martial aspects of Shaolin are subordinate to Buddhist ideals.
